Does Apple Want to Stop You From Using iPhone Cameras at Concerts? (PC Magazine)

Many concerts ban attendees from taking photos or video footage. But increasingly sophisticated smartphones make it difficult for event security to enforce those rules. Apple, however, is reportedly developing software that would shut off your camera at concerts.

Patently Apple has uncovered a patent published on June 2 that would use infrared receivers to cripple your phone's camera when it's opened at live shows. The idea includes an image-processing system that would "determine whether each image detected by the camera includes and infrared signal with encoded data." Although the camera would be inactive, other apps on the phone would function normally.

How would it work? Infrared transmitters would be placed near the stage and "when a camera is pointed at the stage to take a photograph or video, the infrared transmitter near the stage would communicate with your camera and instruct it to disable capturing capabilities." It could also be used to prevent people from recording in movie theaters.

In some cases, this software would allow photos or videos to be captured, but it would apply a watermark to this protected media.

However, this patent could also be used for other purposes. Patently Apple pointed to museums with exhibits where photography is prohibited; infrared signals could be used to block iPhones from taking pictures. But it could also be used to provide additional information about a painting or a sculpture. It could be used in retail to give information on a particular item like price, availability, and location in the store.

Nuance Voice Recognition Gets iOS Mic App (PC Magazine)

In the midst of rumors about Apple adding voice-to-text capabilities to the iPhone 5 and iOS 5, the leader in that technology, Nuance, has announced a major update to its Dragon NaturallySpeaking application.

The new version actually includes an iOS app for iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches that turns any of these devices into a remote wireless mic for Dragon. Like any self-respecting software, the new version also includes a social networking tie-in, making Facebook and Twitter posts simpler.

"As mobile devices and social networks have become a more important part of our customers' lives, they have asked us for more flexibility in how they can use Dragon," said Peter Mahoney, senior vice president and general manager for Dragon at Nuance. "People who have never tried Dragon before will be genuinely impressed with all the ways it lets you interact with your digital world. Those who are already familiar with Dragon will see some exciting improvements that extend its use with social sharing, and add flexibility with microphones and recording devices."

Nuance had already released a free speech-to-text app for iOS, called Dragon Dictation, which lets users speak to send SMS text messages, emails, and social media updates. The app has a four-star rating in the iOS app store and has ranked as a top free app since its release in December 2009. The new Dragon Remote Microphone app will also be free, but is only useful with the Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11.5 or higher desktop app, which sells for $99.99 in the Home edition and $199.99 in the Premium edition. Premium adds playback of recorded speech command sequences, multiple dictation sources, the ability to control Microsoft Office apps, and more.

With version 11.5 of the Windows-only desktop app, users will now be able to tell their PC things like: "Post to Facebook" or "Post to Twitter." They'll also be able to search Amazon, Twitter, maps, or send an email with similar ease.

The apps interface has also been updated. A new sidebar shows commonly needed commands and a history of those you use frequently. Also made easier are setup and many voice commands. For example, you can now say "bold" followed by the text you want boldfaced, and you can correct or format multiple occurrences of a word or phrase. Finally, NaturallySpeaking 11.5 adds support for several newer mainstream applications, such as Internet Explorer 9, Windows Live Mail 2011, OpenOffice Writer 3.3, and Windows 7 SP1.

Microsoft releases Kinect software for developers (Reuters)

SEATTLE (Reuters) – Microsoft Corp made available on Thursday a Windows 7-compatible test version of the software behind its hit Kinect motion-sensing game device, in the hope that developers will invent a host of "hands-free" features for standard PCs.

Microsoft's Kinect, launched last year, is a sensing camera and microphone device that plugs into the Xbox 360 console, allowing users to play games purely with gestures and voice commands.

The hugely successful device is seen by some as a blueprint for future computing, and was immediately attractive to hackers who devised ways of making it work on standard computers.

Microsoft was at first hostile to such attempts, but by releasing a beta version of the Kinect software development kit is showing that it is interested to see what developers will make of the technology.

Why Send Encrypted Emails?

E-mail has become an indispensable communication tool for individuals as well as businesses. And many times, emails contain confidential and sensitive information that must be protected against eavesdropping. Email messages are often transmitted in plain text over the Internet without any form of email encryption. Sending unencrypted emails through the Internet is like sending postcards through regular mail-anyone that has access can read or modify its content.

This provides multiple opportunities for unauthorized access to your email messages and raises legitimate privacy concerns. A good email encryption solution will use powerful cryptography techniques to ensure your messages are both stored and transmitted securely, and that only you and your recipients have the capability to decrypt your message data.

The problem with traditional email encryption

Traditional email encryption solutions require at least a moderate degree of computer expertise to implement. There is software to purchase, download, and install. There are encryption keys to generate, publish, and maintain. And what do you do when one of your recipients uses a different encryption technology from your own? Yahoo! helps find smartphone 'apps' (AFP)

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) – Yahoo! has begun helping people navigate the sea of applications available for Apple iPhones or mobile gadgets powered by Google-backed Android software.

App Search for personal computers and a free AppSpot program for smartphones were crafted to help people find what they seek at Apple's online App Store or the Android Market.

"Together, they take the guesswork out of finding apps that fit your life," Yahoo! said in a blog post.

"App Search and AppSpot allow you to zero in on any app by showing matching app titles with a full comprehensive description, price, overall star rating from users and screenshots in one spot."

The App Store boasts more than 425,000 of the mini-programs for Apple gadgets, while the Android Market was reported to have about 200,000 and growing.

Data Quality Management for Membership Organisations and Associations

For any customer centric organisation and for membership organisations in particular, maintaining an accurate, up to date and clean store of membership data is an essential ingredient in being able to deliver the kind of customer experience that a member expects. But keeping data clean, de-duplicated and up to date is no easy task unless it is planned for and built into the day to day management of membership information.

Membership data comes from many sources, from:

‧ Completed membership forms
‧ Business cards collected at events
‧ Details telephoned or emailed through
‧ Web site form submissions
‧ Faxes received
‧ And many other channels

So having a centralised repository for core membership data rapidly becomes an essential requirement for any membership organisation. There is nothing more embarrassing or damaging to a members view of an organisations perception of them, than being wrongly communicated to by two areas of the same organisation who hold different views of a members details. So having a clean, accurate "single view of the truth" is essential.

So how do we go about getting clean data and keeping clean? The foundation of any data management strategy is a periodic mass data cleanse exercise that takes all key data - at an organisation and/or individual level - and de-duplicates the data against itself and then cleans key data fields against established key reference data. For example:

1. Validates addresses against the post code data file
2. Validates that phone numbers are in the right format and have the right std code for the location given
3. Validates that email addresses are in the correct format and have valid domain names associated to them

This periodic data cleanse will give a clean base from which to build going forward.

Keeping the data up to date and clean on an on-going basis must then be built into business processes and technology solutions as data is updated by membership management staff and/or by the members themselves. Providing data validation facilities at the point of data entry, whilst not impacting in a negative fashion on the data entry experience, ensures that the data entered matches data reference points. For example checking that the address lines are correct for a given post code, the std code for the telephone number is accurate, and the email address has a valid domain name. All of these "lookup" facilities are easily built into a data entry user interface - for both membership staff and members themselves - and add immense value to ensuring that clean data is entered into a solution.

Once the core data has been validated and cleansed and the record is added to the database, it is important to ensure that the record being added is not already present in the database and, hence, is being duplicated. Data de-duplicate algorithms should be configured appropriately for your particular required level of de-duplication checks to ensure that you can detect the majority of duplicates but, at the same time, do not negatively impact on the process of entering data into the solution. For example, you will need to determine which combination of data fields should be used for a duplicate check - in most case, a combination of first name, last name, post code, first line of address, and email address are used.

Within the combination, you will need to determine the level of "fuzziness" that you will use to match data - for example, is "Dave" and "David" the same, is a slight mis-spelling of a first line of address (a common factor in web form completion) acceptable and will it be able to be used for de-duplication purposes? A competent data management expert will be able to advise you on the basics for such algorithms and will be able to implement them for your particular situation. These algorithms should be reviewed regularly to ensure that they are meeting your needs.

The question of when, and by whom, data de-duplication should be performed should be addressed. For membership staff, should it be upon entering and saving data within the solution (i.e. at the point of data entry) or should it be a separate offline activity (or should it be a combination of both)?

For members entering or modifying their data online then it is highly unlikely that you will ask the member to de-duplicate their own data - there are huge data protection and privacy implications of allowing them to de-dupe themselves. So where and by whom, is such data de-duplication to be performed? Again, your data management strategy should address these points and should be periodically reviewed to ensure that it is working from a data quality viewpoint and a customer experience viewpoint.

As we have seen from just the brief outlines above, there is a fair amount to think about with regards to a data management strategy. It is essential that any data management strategy is built around practical, pragmatic customer and member engagement strategies and becomes a natural part of the customer/member engagement processes. If it becomes an artificial "add on" to such processes, then it won't happen and your data will rapidly decay and become worse than useless. A clear, concise, common sense data management strategy should be documented and adopted across the organisation. It should also be reviewed on a regular basis as a key part of the overall customer/membership management review process. Only then can it provide an invaluable platform for the ongoing quality management of membership data, providing the basis for the development and implementation of all product and service offerings that your organisation wants and needs to provide to its membership base going forward.

Senate bill would add protections for mobile users’ location data (Appolicious)

Sen. Al Franken isn’t happy about the prospect of mobile operating system developers like Google (GOOG), Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT) and Research In Motion (RIMM) gathering users’ location data and sharing it without their permission.

The Minnesota democrat introduced the bill along with Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) on Wednesday, which would require mobile companies like Google and Apple and app developers to ask users for their explicit permission before sharing location data gathered by mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets, with any third parties.

GigaOM has the story. Here’s a quote explaining the bill in more detail:

“The Location Privacy Protection Act, as proposed by Franken and Blumenthal, would close a loophole that allows ‘smartphone companies, app companies and even phone companies offering wireless Internet service to freely share their customers’ location information with third parties without first obtaining customers’ consent.’ Cable and phone companies are already barred from doing so, and Franken and Blumenthal think that restriction should apply to mobile users as well.”

The bill is a direct result of information being released by researchers a month or so ago that showed that Apple’s iPhone 4 was saving all the location data tracked by its GPS in an unencrypted folder that was easily accessible inside the phone. Apple chalked the tracking up to a bug that it corrected with an iOS update, but it came to light that the information has been used by law enforcement officials in their investigations, without the need to obtain a warrant.

Franken and other senators called Google and Apple to a hearing before the Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology and Law, where the lawmakers called for stricter rules on how companies can use customers’ location data. The bill goes a step further, obviously, by forcing the companies to loop in their users on what is done with their data.

Both Google and Apple, along with other mobile platform makers, routinely track user location data for a number of reasons – several app do, as well, although many (Google and Apple included) ask permission before tracking the data or sending it onward. The data is used to hone cellular reception, improve service, track how users make use of mobile data connections and a host of other reasonable pursuits. But the security breach exposed on the iPhone 4 suggested that the data was a lot easier to come by if the person looking for it was knowledgeable, and until now, while Google and Apple have said they’re not doing anything untoward with location data, there was no legal framework preventing them from selling it to advertisers, for example. And a recent investigation by the Wall Street Journal found that about half of the top 101 apps for both platforms were sharing location data with third parties without users’ permission or knowledge.

While the bill might sound like a good idea on its face, there are a lot of factor to consider. Biggest among the concerns is probably just the prevalence of apps making use of location data – from social networks to shopping apps to a number of games, location data is yanked down for almost any reason by too many apps to count. Requiring those apps and Apple to ask the user for permission of iOS users could potentially be a hard thing to implement, although Google seems to do okay by asking users to sign off on the various phone functions an app wants to access when it is downloaded to its Android platform. Adding an extra step to the download process that delineates where data will be sent and under what circumstances probably wouldn’t be a back-breaking enterprise, and it’ll give users information they deserve to have about what is being done with their information.

Go through 'about:config' for increasing cache size. Create a new integer variable by right clicking on the page. Name this as 'browser.cache.memory.capacity.' Set the value to '65536'. Restart the browser, due to the larger cache, Firefox will work much faster.

Dodge And Burn Your Images The Smart Way In Elements 8

Dodging & Burning your Mono images doesn't have to be a guessing game. The Digital Age has changed all that... Thanks to software like Photoshop Elements 8!

Dodging & Burning are terms used more so in photography. It is not exclusive or new to any image editing software. In actual fact it hails from the traditional darkroom. Basically, Dodging was performed by shading an area of the print from exposure for a time resulting in that area being lighter or illuminated. Burning involved increasing the exposure in the chosen areas, resulting in those areas being darker and more intense.

In the traditional method you couldn't actually see the difference your Dodging & Burning had made to your image until after you've developed the print. So in essence it was a bit of a fine art and somewhat of a guessing game! However the digital age has helped take out the guess-work with image editing software such as Photoshop Elements 8. Now you can keep track of your progress. By using the techniques I'm going to share with you, you can also achieve the same outcome, without the hassle!

So here you are with an image that is flat and lifeless. The hills in the background that you could barely see in the before pic are now given some definition, along with mist that is coming up from the sea. All-in-all, a big improvement!

TORONTO – BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd.'s quarterly results on Thursday provided fresh evidence of the company's struggles to come up with a device to compete with the iPhone and smartphones running Google's Android operating system.

The Waterloo, Ontario, company reported a nearly 10 percent drop in its fiscal first-quarter net income.

RIM also said it has been hurt by product delays, announced layoffs and warned that its profit for the current quarter and full fiscal year would come in well below Wall Street's expectations.

It was the second time this year the company has pared back its profit outlook. Its stock fell more than 14 percent in extended trading.

"The existing portfolio of BlackBerry products has been in market for close to a year, and delivering new products has proven more challenging than anticipated," RIM Co-CEO Jim Balsillie said on a conference call with analysts.

The announcements are the latest signs of trouble for RIM. The company dominated the corporate smartphone market and has sought to expand its appeal to consumers, but has recently had trouble with consumers because the phones aren't perceived to be as sexy as its chief competitors.

BlackBerrys are known for their security and reliability as email devices, but they haven't kept pace with Apple Inc.'s iPhones or phones based on Google Inc.'s Android software when it comes to running third-party applications.

Balsillie also acknowledged that the April launch of the company's tablet computer could have gone better. RIM got poor reviews on the Playbook and about 1,000 of the devices had to be recalled because of defective software. The company said it shipped about 500,000 of the tablets in its fiscal first quarter.

"The PlayBook launch did not go as smoothly as we had planned," he said.

Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis made a rare appearance on the conference call as the two defended the business and their role as co-CEOs. RIM has an unusual leadership structure, where two executives, Balsillie and Lazaridis, serve as both co-CEOs and co-chairmen. Dissident shareholders are calling for RIM to separate the roles of CEO and chairman.

Some industry analysts believe RIM is following the same trajectory as Finish handset maker Nokia, which last month warned that its second-quarter sales and margins are expected to be much lower than anticipated because of the competition on devices in both the high- and low-end market.

"We have a strong business," Lazaridis said. "We have made major platform upgrades, and we are almost through this transition."

Lazaridis said RIM was already far along in developing its next-generation BlackBerrys when it realized that U.S. customers wanted higher performance, requiring the company to upgrade the chips used. That posed an engineering challenge and delayed products, he said.

For the three months that ended May 28, RIM earned $695 million, or $1.33 per share. That's down from $769 million, or $1.38 per share, a year ago.

Revenue for the fiscal first quarter rose 16 percent to $4.9 billion from $4.2 billion.

Analysts polled by FactSet expected earnings of $1.32 per share on revenue of $5.1 billion.

Aurion Capital Management analyst Greg Taylor said the results indicate that RIM doesn't appear to have any new smartphones coming out soon.

"Everyone wants to have the newest and greatest device, and they don't have anything to sell right now," Taylor said. "Their guidance shows they're basically not expecting new smartphones this quarter."

For the current quarter, RIM forecast earnings of 75 cents to $1.05 per share, excluding items. Analysts are looking for far higher earnings of $1.36 per share. The company expects revenue of $4.2 billion to $4.8 billion, below analysts' average expectation of nearly $5.3 billion

RIM lowered its full-year earnings outlook sharply. It now expects earnings of $5.25 to $6 per share for fiscal 2012. In April, it had forecast $7.50 per share.

"That guidance was just awful," said Peter Misek, an analyst at Jefferies & Co. in New York. "I'm just surprised at the pace at which this is unraveling right now."

Misek said RIM carriers aren't supporting as before, consumers aren't buying their products as much as before and corporations are looking at alternatives. He said expects further delays in new BlackBerry's and said Apple and Google are "eating their lunch in a multiple of ways."

"As a Canadian, they are national heroes, and watching national heroes lose is not fun. It's kind of like watching the Vancouver Canucks lose. It's not fun," said Misek, referring to Vancouver's loss to Boston in hockey's Stanley Cup Finals.

RIM said earlier Thursday that Don Morrison, its chief operating officer, is going on medical leave.

It also said it is cutting an unspecified number of jobs to reduce costs. Balsillie said the job cuts are "an incredibly difficult decision" but said they do not constitute a restructuring of the company.

"We have grown so much over the past years and we've done 14 or 15 acquisitions over the last bit. This is just a streamlining," Balsillie said. "In no way shape or form would I call this a restructuring."

Lazaridis said company executives understand that recent times have been difficult for shareholders and employees, but said he's confident things will turn around.

Before the earnings RIM's stock was already off 50 percent from its 52-week high. In April, the company slashed earnings and sales forecasts as it faces increased competition. In extended trading after the results came out, RIM's stock fell $5.07, or 14.4 percent, to $30.26. In the regular session, the stock rose 16 cents to close at $35.33 before the earnings were issued.

I've already published an article about optimizing the PC, but how about the Mac? What can Apple users do to gain speed without paying buckets of money on new hardware? Well it's a tricky question because Mac OSX is a Unix based operating system that lacks a register among other performance degraders. Yet I've come up with a few things you can do to optimize your Apple computer.

Watch the space

The bottleneck in any computer is the HDD. The hard drive is very slow and needs to crunch through a lot of data. When it fails to keep up users are confronted with a beach ball, somewhat similar to windows "program is not responding" message. The perfect solution would be to buy an SSD, but this is simply not affordable while maintain an equal level of storage. So you should fall back on option 2: management.

To improve the efficiency of your hard drive, simply remove all the data that is irrelevant. After all, the spinner will have less data to check, thus will be done sooner. Here's a list of things you could do:

Remove trash out of trashcanUncheck unimportant start-up items. Go to preferences > account > login.Remove programs you haven't used in a whileKeep "back-up" files like old documents/videos on an external storage device or in the cloud.Remove emails that aren't of importance.

Updates are always better

It's true because updates are improved versions of the initial version, so in theory they should always be better. Sometimes apps receive new code that also makes them operate faster, so you should always keep your programs up to date. Use Apple updater regularly, and check for new versions of your existing software. Trust me, your Mac will run faster when you do.

Purchase latest operating system

Operating systems are the backbone of any software suite, so your computer should always be running the best version available. For Mac that means Mac OS X Lion (a $29,99 buy), available in July.

Use 3rd party optimizers

To fully optimize your computer some 3rd party optimizing software could be considered. Without trying to influence anyone, personally I like MacKeeper. I think that it's a great package because it checks on software updates and lets you remove foreign language files with just the click of a button. Other packages should do the trick as well, as they generally just follow the pointers above.

Optimizing your Apple computer is an easy and quick job. There isn't much I can say because the operating system cleans itself and shows less gains from unorthodox aggressive methods than say a Windows would. However you can always make big gains by relieving the bottleneck, think about that the next time you're installing new software on your brand new computer.

Installing 7-Zip and Firefox on Windows 7

7-zip is software that allows you to open and extract.zip,.rar files, this type of file is a compressed file that can contain multiple files and folders, and is normally used to shrink a large file down to save space or to group up files for easier transfer/sending.

Go to 7-zip's website and select the "Download" link from the left hand side.Then select the correct download link, most will select the top one.Once selected you should get redirected to a "source forge" website this is normal, you should now get a pop up asking you to, Run, Save or Cancel.
